Some Vague Weirdness
April is upon us. We’ve gotten out and worked a little ground for some first plantings (still too wet out there though, but the sun is getting higher) and we’ve also started the first seeds in the greenhouse. Even though the greenhouses don’t play nearly the same roll as they did when the farm had the CSA (and all the plethora of crops that needed a greenhouse at that time), it still feels like the starting block for the growing season. We may have bent nature a little to do it, but we have summoned some seeds to wake up, and that’s how this thing starts.
And so we too need to wake up, apparently. 2026 is calling, vague weirdness and all.
April starts off the vague weirdness with finickiness. Your toes might be nervously wiggling in your boots with anticipation to get out there and plant, but a quick glance at the forecast and the 6 inches of snow predicted kind of puts the kibosh on that excitement. Even after all these seasons, I still fall into that trap of unrequited anticipations, of planting early, of getting to the market early, of a strong spring push to put an early momentum on the season. Silly. Silly to still fall for April’s weather ruse. Patience is a virtue if only as a cure for anticipations curse.
To add to the “unpredictability”, the current government (predictably) in trying to fit farce in a slot of reason has so far rejected 2 of 3 of our hires through the J1 program that we’ve been a part of for years now. Why? Who needs reasons why? We’ll find out tomorrow if our last hire through the program will be granted a visa tomorrow. Fingers crossed. In the meanwhile, a lovely person, Ally, will be joining us for the season. Ally is coming to us from Texas by way of a couple years living in Minneapolis. We’ll also have a new transplant from Minneapolis to the area, Ocean, whom many of you might recognize from their work at the Midtown Farmers Market as a former manager at that market. Ocean will be with us part time as they get their own farming project kickstarted up this way. We’re excited to start working with Ally next month and Ocean soon after!
So we are off! Come what may, we’ll be bending over backwards to get you some leaves at the farmers markets just as soon as we can and then go wherever 2026 takes us. Something tells me that it’ll be a year best kept close to the ground. We’ll try to stay at that level.
