weeding and seeding

We’ve fallen firmly into the summer groove of weeding and seeding. We won’t be given a break on those two tasks for some time. I don’t know how that strikes the crew, but each morning when we convene, Ori, Daniela and Kelvin seem ready for whatever comes. Obviously, we don’t do today whatever I said we were going to do today the day before. That’s not how this works. If you could make clear plans and stick with them, farming wouldn’t be nearly so much…fun? Yesterday I said we were going to weed through the onion crop and prep some fields, but that was before the forecast of rain one day and derecho winds the next, so now we are going to direct seed (because you can’t seed in the rain, and you can’t hardly put down row cover in straight-line winds).

But the crew rolls, and the season rolls on with them. Kelvin and Ori planted the fall brassicas in the greenhouse this week, and we have taken advantage of that little bit or rain to prep some more fields for fall crops. Kate Bush is blasting from the harvest shed as the days start early and end late.

For myself, I seem to be living in a time warp. Is it the accumulation of years now of doing this? In the moment, I think to myself, “This season is just flying by!!” Then I realize that it’s still June! We have months more of weeding and seeding and plans that change 5 times. So I’ll just try to stay in the present with whatever it is we are weeding, or seeding at that moment..
