future (umm) faith

The garlic is planted. The carrots are all harvested and washed. New plastic has been put on the greenhouses. Fields have been prepped for 2023, as well as the first beds for next springs plantings shaped and ready for seeds to hit the ground. All these little acts of prep are just little acts of intent, and maybe a little (umm) faith, for lack of a better word. They are proof of (eek) faith that things will line up at least just well enough that we can get there, and that we can do it.

We are ending this season dry. So dry. It will probably make for an early start next year, as we may not have to wait long for the fields to be workable after the spring thaw. That will also make for a lot of catch up on Mamma Natures part (10 inches short for the season is what I heard on the radio? Feels like more than that). Though I have (oofda) faith that she can do it, she could also dump a couple inches in one go and it would still just sink right in with the ground asking for more. That’s the way it is with deep thirst, a little relief makes the need even more profound.

So maybe that leads for some clues to the Spring, but it doesn’t answer what kind of winter it will be. Will it be a winter of deep recovery and rest? Or will it just be catching enough breath to sprint into another year? The former is shockingly rare, but I’ll try to keep the (sigh) faith anyway.

Though the markets will continue into winter, work with the crew and most field operations are essentially over. And with that, I owe Ori, Kelvin and Daniela a whole lot of thanks and praise.

Ori is planning to stay in the area and be back for the 2023 season! What great news!! I’ll be happy to have her back for round 2!!

Kelvin and Daniela however, are counting down the last few days of being here. Come Monday, I’ll drop them both at the airport for their next destinations. I owe them both big for coming here, having the moxie to take a chance and taking on the season. It was a risk for them to go to a farm in the middle of nowhere WI (relative to the world at large that is) . For my part, it worked out very well. They are delightful! I’m happy to have had the opportunity to work with them both. I hope their time here was helpful on their paths and that they will take chances on other opportunities in the future. I certain that our paths cross in the future.

Hopefully you can come wish them well at the markets this weekend! The three of them made the season happen. Thanks Crew!
